Do noses run in your family?
Coughs, colds, and the flu are common during winter. WIth more of us spending time indoors, it's easier for germs to spread. To avoid being another statistic, keep in mind the following tips for preventing the spread of illness.
Wash your hands frequently: This is your best defense. Wash the entire hand using warm water and soap. Do not forget to clean under fingernails. Wash for at least 10 seconds.
Avoid putting your hands near your eyes, nose, or mouth: Unless you have washed, many bacteria and viruses are spread from a surface to your hands to your face.
Get enough sleep: During sleep, your body's immune system goes into high gear to protect you from illness. Lack of sleep can reduce immune function making you more susceptible to sickness.
Drink plenty of water: In the fall and winter, it is easy to overlook your thirst and get dehydrated. Make sure to consume 8-12 glasses of water a day.
Continue a moderate exercise program: Try to maintain a 3-4 day a week exercise routine. Being consistent with this routine is important.
Eat healthy: Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Eat a well balance diet.
Limit alcohol intake: Alcohol can be dehydrating which may also decrease your resistance to bacteria.
Get a flu shot: Flu shots are especially beneficial for those with weakened immune systems or those who come in contact with a lot of people.
Quit smoking: Smoke irritates the bronchial passages which may increase your chances of catching a cold and may prolong cold symptoms. Better yet, consider using this opportunity to stop smoking altogether.
Control Stress: Easy to say, harder to do. Being under stress can double your chance of catching a cold. The body is often most vulnerable when you calm down after a bout of stress.
