Menactra VaccineThe Menactra Vaccine is available in the Olin Allergy and Immunization Clinic. The A and I Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Services are by appointment only (call 353-4660) and the cost for the vaccine plus the administration fee is $189 (subject to change).
Frequently Asked QuestionsWill the Menactra vaccine protect me completely from meningitis? No. The vaccine is effective against specific serogroups of meningococcal meningitis, including types A, C, Y and W-135. It has an estimated efficacy of 85-90% against those groups. It does not protect against serogroup B which accounts for approximately 46% of meningococcal cases in the U.S. The vaccine also does not protect against other types of bacterial meningitis or against viral meningitis. How long will the vaccine protect me? Protection from this vaccine lasts several years. How widespread is meningococcal disease? The disease may occur in 1-2 of 100,000 individuals per year nationwide. Have there been any cases of meningococcal disease at MSU this semester? No. How much is the vaccine and will insurance cover it? The vaccine is currently priced at $189 and is subject to change. In most cases insurance will not cover the cost of vaccine. Individuals should check their insurance policy. Can my spouse and kids get the vaccine? The vaccine is available at Olin to the spouses of students, faculty and staff, but Olin is unable to provide the vaccine to children. Children should be referred to their pediatrician. Who should not receive the vaccine? Individuals with an allergy to thimerosal, a substance found in several vaccines and in contact lens solution. Individuals who are acutely ill with a fever of 101 F or higher. In addition, the vaccine is not recommended for individuals under the age of two, or over the age of thirty. What else can I do to protect myself from illness? The following suggestions may help protect individuals from many of the most common winter illnesses: wash your hands frequently, avoid sharing beverage containers or eating utensils, avoid smoking and smoky environments, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet and avoid drinking too much alcohol.
