Depression, anxiety, relationship problems, academic concerns - these are just some of the issues that affect many MSU students. If you think you may benefit from talking with a counselor, your first step could be to call the MSU Counseling Center to schedule an appointment. Any student registered for one or more credits is eligible for a consultation - assessment interview. As resources permit, additional services and/or referrals may be provided. Call the Counseling Center to check available times, 355-8270; TTY 353-7278. The MSU Counseling Center is located in the Student Services building. Psychiatry Services are located at Olin Health Center. Consultation and treatment is provided for a wide range of mental health concerns including: mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, alcohol/substance abuse, and psychosis. Olin Psychiatry works in a collaborative fashion with the MSU Counseling Center and the Olin Primary Care Clinic. There are bipolar, anxiety, ADHD, and depression support groups at the MSU Counseling Center as well as numerous other support groups. For online resources for depression, anxiety, stress management, test anxiety, eating disorders, and much more, visit the MSU Counseling Center Self-Help Resources web page. Students with mental health concerns who desire consultation/treatment with a psychiatrist should first present to the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center staff will do an initial assessment. If Psychiatric referral is needed, the counselor will evaluate whether Olin Psychiatry or a community resource would be the best fit and make the appropriate referral. Referrals to Psychiatry can also be generated by Olin Primary Care Clinic providers. Psychiatry Appointments: Clinic hours are Monday through Friday and by appointment only. Appointments can be made with the Psychiatry staff by referral. The first three Psychiatry appointments are prepaid by the University for enrolled MSU students (this does not apply to MSU Law or Lifelong Ed students).Cancellations: Twenty-four hour notice is requested for all cancellations. There is a $50.00 fee for no shows and late cancellations (less than 24 hour notice) of the initial consultation and a $20.00 cancellation fee for follow up visits. Cancellations should be called in to 353-8737 or 355-7707. Prescription Refills: It is the patient's responsibility to know at the time of the appointment whether medication refills are needed. If medication runs out in between appointments, please call to schedule an appointment to get a refill. Providing prescriptions to last until the time of that appointment is up to the discretion of the treating Psychiatrist. Price Increase Effective May 1, 2006 prices will increase to $103 for a 25-30 minute visit and $149 for a 45 minute visit. URGENT MATTERS OR EMERGENCIES For urgent matters or emergencies, Counselors and Psychiatrists can be contacted between appointments. If the issue is clearly medication related, leave a message for the treating Psychiatrist by calling 353-8737. Efforts will be made to reply promptly to urgent matters, usually within the same business day. If the treating Psychiatrist is not working that day, another Psychiatrist may answer the call. If the urgent matter is one of emotional distress and the patient is working with both a Counselor and a Psychiatrist, the treating Counselor should be contacted. The Counselor will help decide if the Psychiatrist may access care through contacting the treating Psychiatrist as above. Students who are in crisis and are currently patients with the Counseling Center or Psychiatry can, in case of emergency, contact someone after hours or on the weekends by calling the Olin Phone Information Nurse at 353-5557. Referrals: Referrals to Psychiatry originate both from Olin Health Center and the Counseling Center. Often when a person is in treatment with a Psychiatrist, they are also seeing a Counselor. The Psychiatrist and Counselor act as a treatment team, coordinating care and sharing information. At the beginning of treatment a release is signed to facilitate this cooperation.Psychiatry Staff
